Hospitals and Medical Services, 1853–1951

Dr G. A. Slot recounts the medical services operated by the Billiton mining company. The first company medical provision dates to 1853. A workers’ hospital was established near the Siboerik River in Tandjong-Pandan in 1865 and rebuilt in 1873 and 1911.

A European clinic dated from 1926. The company’s workers’ hospital at Manggar, built in 1930, returned to use in January 1950 to ease pressure on Tandjong-Pandan. Around 1951, additional hospital facilities, a new pharmacy and a laboratory were under construction.

Malaria and public health

The article contains a monthly chart of positive malaria cases at Manggar and Tandjong-Pandan from 1947 to 1950 and discusses mosquito control, drainage and spraying. The chart reflects the reporting practices of that period; it is not a complete epidemiological record of Belitung.
