Insects of Billiton (1888–1891)
An early scientific record of Billiton's insect life, based on the collections made by Dr. A. G. Vorderman in June 1888 and the list published by P. C. T. Snellen in 1891.
The 1888 expedition
In June 1888, A. G. Vorderman, a physician based in Batavia, visited Billiton and neighbouring Mendanao primarily to study birds. During the excursion he also assembled a substantial collection of insects. Most of the butterflies and moths were sent to M. C. Piepers for study.
Snellen compared these specimens with earlier records published by Godman, Salvin and Druce in 1878, highlighting the affinities between Billiton's Lepidoptera and those of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo rather than Java.
Butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera)
These are historical figures reported in the publication, not a present-day biodiversity count. The introductory editorial note reports 93 butterfly species (Rhopalocera) and 108 Lepidoptera in total after additional museum specimens were taken into account.
Among the species discussed were Adolias (Tanaecia) vordermani and Chalcosia analis, described as new in the historical study. The original names are retained here; modern classifications may differ.
For the island's broader butterfly history, see Butterflies of Billiton.
Other insects recorded
The 1891 editorial introduction also mentions specimens from other insect orders received by the Leyden Museum. These include:
| Group | Examples named in the 1891 publication |
|---|---|
| Beetles (Coleoptera) | Aceraius emarginatus, Catharsius molossus, Tricholepis vestita, and unidentified species of Lachnosterna, Lepidiota and Anomala |
| Wasps, ants and relatives (Hymenoptera) | Vespa tropica, Sphex diabolicus, Camponotus gigas, two Mutilla species, and a large wasp reported under a historical name |
| Cockroaches and mantises (listed under Orthoptera) | Panesthia javanica and an unidentified mantis |
The insect groupings and scientific names reflect the original 1891 source; classifications and spellings may have changed. The article is mainly a Lepidoptera list, not a complete inventory of every insect order on Billiton.
Why this collection matters
Vorderman's specimens provide a dated record of natural history collecting on Billiton in 1888, while the 1891 publication documents the development of scientific knowledge about the island. The records are especially valuable when read alongside later studies of butterflies, birds, mammals and snakes.
